The Honolulu Museum of Art School Gallery and Hawaii Craftsmen Association are hosting “the In, Of, or About Fiber Hawaii 2016 Juried Show” Aug. 23 to Sept. 10 on Oahu.
An opening reception is slated 5:30-8 p.m. Aug. 23. The reception will include the Fibermorphic Fashion Show starting at 7, a wearable art show featuring work of Hawaii fiber artists and fashion designers.
Big Island fiber artists can submit entries for jurying on Oahu, and are responsible for all mailing/shipping and insurance costs to get their work to Honolulu by the Aug. 18 due date. Art/craft work acceptable is traditional or nontraditional fiber media with a fresh approach to using fiber materials or techniques, including wearables. Entries in media other than fiber are welcome and will be judged from the perspective of a fiber theme. All entries must be of original design and created independently within the last two years. No work previously juried and exhibited on Oahu is eligible.
Juror is Glen Kaufman, textile designer and professor of art emeritus. He is an internationally known workshop teacher and lecturer, co-author of “Design on Fabrics,” past president of the Surface Design Association, and continues to write articles for the Surface Design Journal and other publications in the United States and Japan.
Kaufman has maintained a studio in Kyoto, Japan. where he has spent part of each year since 1983. He has had many solo exhibitions in the U.S. and Japan, in addition to several in South Korea. His record of group shows is extensive including venues in the U.S., Europe, Africa and Asia. His work in the permanent collections of the Museum of Art & Design, NYC, The Cleveland Museum of Art, Racine Art Museum (Wisoconsin), Kyoto National Museum of Modern Art, DeYoung Museum, Renwick Museum and private collections.
He received his fine arts master’s degree in textiles from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Michigan, was awarded a Fulbright Grant to Denmark and upon return to the U.S. worked the NYC design studio of Dorothy Liebes. In 1960, Kaufman headed the textile program at Cranbrook Academy of Art, and in 1967 established the Program in Fabric Design at the University of Georgia. In 1999, he launched the Study Abroad Program – Japan in Kyoto and retired from the University of Georgia in 2008. He is the recipient of two NEA Individual Artist Grants plus various grants and awards at UGA.
