Flordelino Miguel

Flordelino “Floyd” Asuncion Miguel, 90, of Hilo, died June 24, 2016, at a care home in Hilo. He was born on Feb. 11, 1926, in Laoag, Philippines. He was retired from the Department of Taxation, State of Hawaii, as division head of Assessing and Appraisal Program of the Hawaiian Island District. He also retired from the Hawaii Army National Guard. He served in the 1st Filipino Infantry Regiment, U.S. Army during WWII.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. July 6 at Dodo Mortuary Chapel, Hilo; Wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue from 8:30 to 10 a.m. July 7 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hilo; Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m.; burial to follow at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2. Casual attire.

He is survived by wife, Felipa Miguel; daughters, Marie Miguel, Eileen Durham, Sister Patricia Miguel and Doreen (David) Uhlmann; sons, Robert Miguel, Mario Miguel and Matthew Miguel; sister, Jo Segovia; brother, Roger (Joan) Grande; two half-sisters; one half-brother; seven grandsons; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Cori Kahalewai

Cori Malia Kahalewai, 37, of Keaau died June 1 at the Hilo Medical Center. Born in Honolulu, she was a homemaker.

A celebration of her life will begin at 10 a.m. July 8, 2016, in the Haili Tent at the Panaewa Park in Hilo, Hawaii. Casual attire.

She is survived by companion, Kortney Miyasato of Puna; children, Tiare Ishibashi of Papaikou, Kuuipo Hill of Branson, Mo., Samuel Judd of Kanohe, Isaiah Awai of Hilo, Kamalani Awai of Hilo, Nui Awai of Hilo, Pai’ea Miyasato of Puna; mother, Lisa (Papa Charlie) White of Hilo; father, Mark Gordon Kahalewai of Waimanalo; stepfather, Virgil (Danielle) Johnson of Honolulu; sisters, Iwalani Kahalewai of Honolulu, Sheyleen Johnson-Labrador of Hilo, Kanani Johnson of Hilo, Malina Johnson of Hilo; brothers, Manu Kahalewai of Waimanalo; Simeon Johnson of Hilo; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts & uncles.

Yukio Tanaka

Yukio “Yuki” Tanaka, 76, of Hilo died June 14, 2016, at the Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu.Born in Papaikou, he was a retired draftsman technician for the Department of Transportation, State Highways Division, member of New Hope East Hawaii and a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m. July 8 at Dodo Mortuary Chapel; a celebration of his life will begin at 10. Casual attire. Family requests no flowers and no koden (monetary gifts).

Survived by sisters, Masako Nakaoka of Honomu, Kimiko (Tadayuki) Kitamura of Honolulu; brother, Roy Tanaka of Papaikou; sister-in-law, Betty Tanaka of Papaikou; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts & uncles. Arrangements by Dodo Mortuary.

Doreen Makuakane

Doreen Napualani Keohokapu Botelho Ishimine Makuakane, 87, of Kapaau, died June 29, 2016, at Kohala Hospital. Born April 1, 1929, in Kapaau, she was a retired clerk for Straub Clinic, a former dietician for Kaiser Permanente and Hawaiian language teacher for Punana Leo O Kona, a member of Kaahumanu Society, St. Michael’s Church and Sacred Hearts Church in Hawi.

Friends may call at 8 a.m. July 9 at Sacred Hearts Church in Hawi. Service at 10 a.m.

She is survived by son, Errol Ishimine of Kailua-Kona; daughters, Marlene (Charles) Thurman of Florida, Shirlene Conklin of California; stepsons, Jeffrey Makuakane of Hilo, Tim Makuakane of South Carolina; stepdaughters, Gabrielle Makuakane of Honolulu, Suzette Ventimiglio of California; brothers, Delano Keohokapu, Purdy (Barbara) Keohokapu; sisters, Adeline Lehua Mandac all of Honolulu, Lily Farm, Judy (Barry) Koffman all of Kailua-Kona; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, numerous nephews and nieces.

Paul Jensen

Paul Gillespie Jensen, 73, of Kailua-Kona died June 20, 2016, at Kona Community Hospital after a long battle with cancer. Born May 4, 1943, in Oakland, Calif., he was a retired Realtor with Clark Realty, Keauhou. He had long career in international sales, first with Printed Circuits Int’l, Sunnyvale, Calif., then with Optical Coating Laboratories, based in Santa Rosa, Calif., and was an expert in the Far East and lived in Singapore for almost five years before moving to Kona.

A celebration of life will be held from 3 p.m. to sunset July 16 at Kona By The Sea. Attendees are invited to bring a pupu to share. Cold drinks will be served.

Paul is survived by wife, Kathleen Jensen of Kailua-Kona; stepson, Brian (Amy) Jensen of San Mateo, Calif.; sister, Barbara (Ray) Capra of Lafayette, Calif.; two granddaughters; three nieces and a nephew.

Barbara Wright

Barbara Evelyn Wright, 90, of Waikoloa died June 23, 2016, at the Regency at Hualalai. Born April 6, 1926, in Pasadena, Calif., she was a doctor of microbiology, biochemistry and immunology and was a post doctorate fellow at the Carslberg Laboratory in Copenhagen, Denmark. She was also a researcher for the National Institute of Health, Harvard Medical School, Mass., General Hospital and the University of Montana. She is recognized as one of the first American women to have entered the World Championships for Kayaking as well as the first Olympics for the sport of kayaking. The U.S. Department of the Interior awarded her a Deed of Trust at Grand Canyon National Park where she ran the Colorado River in a kayak in 1970.

Services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Audubon Society in her name.

She is survived by daughters, Sonja Kalckar of Honokaa, Nina Kalckar of Waimea; numerous nieces and nephews.
