POHAKULOA TRAINING AREA — A flare-up Wednesday afternoon in an old burn area near Waikii Ranch was spotted and fought largely by helicopters, firefighters said.
The fire was reported by a tour helicopter that was passing over the area on a tour, firefighters said.
Much of the work was done by a Hawaii Fire Department helicopter, who both worked to spot the fire and unloaded several buckets of water on the blaze to extinguish it. An estimated acre amount wasn’t immediately available.
The fire is not publicly accessible and it appears the ignition came from a smoldering patch left by the June 6 fire, firefighters said.
That fire burned over 400 acres at the Army training area, and firefighters were able to prevent it from threatening homes.
