HONOLULU (AP) — Honolulu police say two officers shot and killed a knife-wielding man in an apartment building.

Police say the officers feared for their lives and were forced to fire their guns to stop the 61-year-old man.

News reports say Tuesday afternoon’s shooting took place at a public housing complex.

Officers responding to a 911 call went to the Kinau Street building, where they found the man armed with a long knife.

Police say the man refused numerous commands to drop the knife and lunged at the officers.

He later died at a hospital.

The medical examiner’s office has yet to release his identity.

Police say the two officers who fired their weapons have 18 and five years of service. They will be placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.
