Hawaii Island police arrested 18 motorists for suspected driving under the influence of an intoxicant between June 20 and Sunday. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes, and one was younger than age 21.
Hawaii Island police arrested 18 motorists for suspected driving under the influence of an intoxicant between June 20 and Sunday. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes, and one was younger than age 21.
So far this year, there have been 538 DUI arrests compared with 482 during the same period last year, an increase of 11.6 percent, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
During the week, Kona officers arrested nine motorists while Puna officers arrested five and South Hilo officers three. South Kohala officers arrested one driver.
There have been 714 major accidents so far this year compared with 743 during the same period last year, a decrease of 3.9 percent.
So far this year, there have been 10 fatal crashes on Hawaii Island resulting in 11 fatalities, compared with 10 fatal crashes resulting in 13 fatalities during the same period last year. That is a 15.4 percent decrease from last year.
