Hawaii Emergency Management Agency and Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency will test new sirens between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at several Big Island locations.
Sirens will be tested at Kapaa Beach Park and Mahukona Beach Park in North Kohala; Waiaka in Waimea; Puako Beach Road, Historic Park, and Holoholokai Public Beach Park in Waikoloa; and Kealakehe Elementary School in Kailua-Kona.
These new sirens are part of the Statewide Siren Modernization Project. Residents nearby may hear the siren sound six to eight times for 30-second to 1-minute intervals. Testing will include short blasts known as “burps.” During the tests, emergency management officials and technicians will check that installation work on the sirens has been completed properly.
