WAIMEA — Construction on the Waimea District Park continues, with the frame of the initial structure visible from Ala Ohia Road. A metal roof in nearly completed on one side of the covered play courts building that can be seen from the southeast side of town, atop exposed beams.
“We expect the contractor to complete the covered play courts by late October or early November of this year,” said Jason Armstrong, public information officer for County of Hawaii Department of Parks &Recreation. “Weather permitting, all work should be finished and the park ready for use at that time.”
The park will be approximately 24 acres in phase 1. The facility will also include a multi-use field and parking, according to Councilwoman Margaret Wille.
When the original plan was shared at a public meeting organized by Hawaii County Parks &Recreation Department in October 2014 at Kahilu Town Hall, the park plan included 50 acres, three covered buildings, three fields, a courtyard, two playground areas, and a multi-use pedestrian and bike path.
