Summer meals program is on

More than 60 sites across the state have begun offering meals through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s summer meals programs.

The Summer Meal Site Finder is a free application that features a searchable map to help locate sites serving summer meals. Parents and caregivers can also identify nearby sites by calling 866-348-6479 or texting FOOD to 877-877.

Turnbaugh completes basic training

U.S. Air Force Airman Jordan Turnbaugh graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Turnbaugh is the daughter of Toni Turnbaugh of Frederick, Md., and Mark Turnbaugh of Kona.

Cuaresma makes college dean’s list

Alexandria Cuaresma of Kailua-Kona was named to the dean’s list at Eastern Oregon University for the spring term.

Qualifying students achieve and maintain a grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale while completing a minimum of 12 hours of graded coursework.

July Hui Laulima meeting canceled

West Hawaii Hui Laulima will not meet on its regularly scheduled date on Friday, July 1 because of Independence Day weekend. The next meeting will be Aug. 5.

Farewell planned for June Hodgkiss

Long-time Kona resident June Hodgkiss, who owned and operated Draperies by Delaine from 1973 until her retirement in 2005, will relocate to Tacoma, Washington on July 4.

She was a founding member of Kona United Methodist Church on Palani Road. There will be a farewell coffee at 9:30 a.m. July 3 at the church for those who would like to say goodbye.

Cho to be named officer of the month

The Kona Crime Prevention Committee will honor Officer Darren Cho as officer of the month at noon July 6.

The public is invited to attend the Officer of the Month luncheons normally held on the first Wednesday of each month. The cost is $20, all inclusive at the Huggo’s restaurant. Reservations are required and may be made by contacting Liz Holey at lholey@hawaii.rr.com, phone 443-7708 by Monday.

The Kona Crime Prevention Committee encourages and supports our police department in their efforts to prevent crime, deter potential criminals and enforce our laws. The committee also provides needed police equipment for use by Kona District Officers when funds cannot support those needs.
