More than 100 skateboarders, rollerskaters and bike riders gathered for an all-day event on June 19 in Kapaau. The morning began with a parade that took a downhill cruise on highway 270 to Kamehameha Park.
As part of the eighth annual community celebration, Roots Advocates for Youth hosted a silent auction for phase two of Roots Skate Park. Nearly $3,000 was raised. The nonprofit organization will still need to raise $280,000, according to Richey Riggs, the group’s volunteer director. The amount will match funds donated previously by the county and councilwoman Wille.
At Sunday’s event, food was provided by the Dragon Wagon, Island Crave Shave Ice and Forrest Elmers Acai Bowls, among others, with live, local surf music performed by Kim Sweeney and “Solar Wind,” a raffle and skateboarding contest. As the guest of honor, Wille presented a skate park promotional video produced by local filmmaker Keith Nealy and co-producer Tonya Tyler.
