WAIKOLOA – Summer’s here and the playground is scorching hot. However that will soon change.
On June 18, volunteers from Waikoloa Village Outdoor Circle and Abundant Life Ministries’ Friends of the Park planted and blessed a 5-year-old monkeypod tree that will create shade for the playground at Hooko Street Park.
The planning, planting and funds were raised by the Waikoloa Village Outdoor Circle, led by Sally Mazzarella. Pastor Lani Larrua of Abundant Life Ministries provided the blessing and dedication of the tree to the community. The tree was planted by Puna Certified Nursery.
Abundant Life Ministries adopted Hooko Park six years ago and now are known as the “Friends of the Park.” This group and the County of Hawaii Parks and Recreation Department have worked to provide the volunteer man hours to take care of the park’s landscape and the clean-up of graffiti and maintenance of facilities.
A monkeypod tree canopy can grow up to 200 feet wide, providing the much needed shade.
