Hawaii Island police arrested 16 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant between June 6 and Sunday. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes, and two were younger than age 21.

Hawaii Island police arrested 16 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant between June 6 and Sunday. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes, and two were younger than age 21.

So far this year, there have been 520 DUI arrests compared with 469 during the same period last year, an increase of 10.9 percent.

During the week, Kona officers arrested eight motorists while Puna officers arrested four. South Hilo officers arrested three motorists while officers in Hamakua officers arrested one driver.

There have been 674 major accidents so far this year compared with 715 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5.7 percent.

So far this year, there have been 10 fatal crashes on Hawaii Island resulting in 11 fatalities, compared with 10 fatal crashes resulting in 13 fatalities during the same period last year.
