Frozen mixed vegetables and peas sold by Wal-Mart, Target and other retailers nationwide are being recalled because they have the potential to be contaminated with listeria.
The recalled vegetables produced by National Frozen Foods Corp. may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
There have been no reported illnesses attributed to the recalled items to date. Following cooking preparation instructions on the labels will effectively reduce the risk of exposure to this bacterium.
The “Not-Ready-To Eat” frozen green peas and frozen mixed vegetables are being recalled as a precaution with the health and safety of consumers as top priority. The recall was the result of a sample tested by the company. The Food and Drug Administration has been made aware of this recall.
The products were distributed in retail stores nationwide between Sept. 2, 2015 and June 2. They can be identified by the date codes printed on the back of the retail sized bag or the side of the master case. Consumers should not consume these products, but rather return them to the place of purchase for a refund.
