Terry F. Hamilton, or Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, will discuss radiation monitoring at Enewetak Atoll. The talk is at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Oceanview Community Center, 92-8924 Leilani Circle, Oceanview.
A light meal will be served after the presentation. A shuttle bus will pick up attendees from 2-2:45 p.m. at the the Princess Kaiulani Boulverard bus stop and will drop them off from 6-6:45.

AARP Smart Driver class planned
An AARP Smart Driver class is offered at 1 p.m June 27 at the Palisades Recreation Center on lower Kaiminani Drive.
This class is geared toward the older driver. It does not include driving or written tests, only informative quizzes. It covers subjects that may affect drivers as they age, such as hearing, eye sight, reflexes, safety rules, road rage, rules of the road, and problems at intersections.
Participants may receive a discount on their insurance.

Grant will purchase school supplies
The Friends of the Children of West Hawaii has received a grant from the Friends of Hawaii Charities in support of the third annual Supply our Students school supply drive, slated for July 9 at the Kailua-Kona Walmart and on July 16t at Longs/CVS in Waimea.
Funds will be used to supplement the purchase of school supplies for children in who have been neglected, abused or witnessed domestic violence. In partnership with a variety of both government and private agencies, requests on behalf of these children will be submitted to the Friends of the Children of West Hawaii, who will then supply a backpack filled with the necessary school supplies to ensure children begin the year with everything they need.
The Friends of Hawaii Charities – the event host of the Sony Open in Hawaii – was formed for the purpose of raising funds for Hawaii charities. Through the charity partnership with The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, they have been able to distribute $16 million over the years to programs such as the Supply Our Students project.

3 West Hawaii women receive scholarships
The American Association of University Women Kona Branch awarded its 2016 scholarships to three young women in West Hawaii high schools. Each student will receive a $2,000 scholarship to assist with their future educational goals.
Nala Foti, a graduate of Konawaena High School, plans to study nursing at University of Hawaii at Manoa with a specialty in anesthesiology. Foti has been involved in many activities during high school and has received certificates of excellence in seven classes, is a competitive paddler who holds three state titles and was active in the Leo Club, volunteering over 100 hours of community service.
Brianna Halliwell graduated with an Academic Honors Diploma from Konawaena High School, and plans to pursue pharmaceutical studies at Berea College in Kentucky. Halliwell has been involved in a variety of activities during high school including the National Honor Society, the Leo Club, and community service volunteer events such as Ironman, the Go Green Club, and the Federal Credit Union Board.
Lauren Villafuerte, was at the top of her class at Honokaa High School and plans to study biomedical engineering at Simpson College in Iowa to combine her interest in the medical field and engineering. She has a varied and impressive resume and was the senior class vice president, was active in the Robotics Club, the Science Club, the National Honors Society, the Math League, and Upward Bound. Villafuerte was also a volunteer at Lavaman, the Lions Club, an elementary school volunteer, and other events.
Kona Historical Society online auction coming up
Kona Historical Society will auction off unique items starting July 10 to raise money for an an upcoming gallery project and school and community programs.
Last year’s online auction had over $45,000 in auction items. Bidders may visit biddingforgood.com/konahistorical to donate an item or preview some items that will be available for bidding. More items will be added until the auction begins. Bidders must register for the auction on the webpage to receive auction updates.
