Summer reading program is on

The Kailua-Kona Public Library is planning its children’s summer reading program, “On Your Mark, Get Set, Read.” There will be crafts and programs for all ages. The scheduled events include:

Science experiments with Denise, for kindergarten to fifth-graders at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Build your own terrarium for kindergarten through fifth-graders at 3 p.m. June 29.

Make yourself a healthy snack at 3 p.m. July 6.

Activity day for toddlers, children and teens at 3 p.m. July 13. The day includes sidewalk chalk, face painting and a scavenger hunt.

Children 5 years or younger must be accompanied by a parent.

Kiwanis Club meets Wednesday

Kiwanis Club of Kailua-Kona will meet at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Humpy’s upstairs room in Coconut Grove Marketplace on Alii Drive. All visiting Kiwanis and prospective members are invited.

Kiwanis serves the community by conducting service projects that respond to identified needs, especially related to children.

VFW scheduled announced

VFW Post 12122 behind Kona Locksmith off Kaiwi Street has several events planned.

Tacos will be served with salad and desert for $5 on Friday.

Kailua-Kona Seniors meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hale Halawai. After a regular meeting the group will celebrate June birthdays. This will be followed by board games.

Senior Medicare Patrol offers talk on volunteerism

The public is invited to the sixth in a series of six free presentations titled “Volunteerism, the Benefits of Volunteering with SMP.”

The talk is given by the Kona volunteers for Senior Medicare Patrol, in partnership with Regency at Hualalai.

The talk is from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Regency at Hualalai, 75-181 Hualalai Road.

Governor Ige holds community forum

Governor Ige and key members of his team will hold a community connection from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Hawaii Community College—Palamanui campus. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

This is one of many statewide dialogues. It is an opportunity to engage in meaningful discussion with the governor, Homeless Coordinator Scott Morishige and members of the departments of Land and Natural Resources, Transportation and Agriculture about significant West Hawaii issues.

Auntie’s Angels seeks fresh food donations

Auntie’s Angels Soup Kitchen ‘n’ Pantry will be held on Saturday at Hualalai Elderly Housing. The nonprofit is seeking donations of fresh fruit and vegetables, canned goods and paper products to share with kupuna at the monthly food distribution.

The men of Hualalai will be celebrated with a special luncheon and will be entertained by Bolo Mikiela Rodrigues.

Worm composting presentation at library

Sponsored by The Friends of the Libraries, Kona, the Community Seed Library will host a presentation by Leona Kassel and Chris Pascual from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, June 25 at Kailua-Kona Public Library.

This program “Vermicomposting with Nature’s Zero Waste Superheroes” will present information on composting worms to recycle food waste, ideas on how to set up and maintain a worm bin and suggestions on how to harvest worm compost and utilize vermicompost as a soil amendment.

Event provides free health, vision services

The Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity is partnering with Project Vision Hawaii, the Kailua-Kona Lions Club and Pastor Megan Rohrer from Welcome Ministry in San Francisco to hold a Kona vision event.

Planned from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 25 at the Old Kona Airport Makaeo Events Pavilion, the event will serve homeless and low-income people. Attendees will have the opportunity to receive free vision screening, glasses, blood pressure, blood sugar, and HIV screening, free meals and haircuts. The free glasses will be ordered for attendees and later distributed by LCHT’s HERO Ministry.

Cultural festival coming up at Honaunau park

Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park will host a cultural festival from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 25-26.

The entry fee to the park will be waived. Activities include Hawaiian crafts, games, demonstrations, guided walks, canoe rides (Saturday) and food tasting (Sunday).
