Maile Lee Tavares: “It helps to keep us connected. It’s such a busy modern landscape; sometimes we just need that historical connection.”
Charles Olmsted: “I love a parade. I’m going to spend the day blessing. I spent the last few days flying a sign saying ‘Pray for peace, God bless, and happy King’s day.’”
Jacob Abordo: “It brings everybody together. It represents our king and it shows unity. I like the fact that years later they still honor the ancients.”
Ar-Jay Swangel: “It’s a celebration of Hawaii and culture. The hoolaulea afterward is fantastic. There are food booths, a crafts fair and concert all going on at once, so you can do a little of everything. And you run into everyone you know.”
Kari Swangel: “The pa‘u units, the horse units, the flowers. The flowers around the princesses.”
