Window screening workshop set

Lowe’s, Habitat for Humanity West Hawaii and the State of Hawaii Health Department will host a free window screening workshop from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, June 16 at the Lowe’s Kona store, 75-5677 Hale Kapili St.

The event supports efforts to teach the public how to protect their homes against mosquitoes infected with dengue fever and the Zika virus from entering through broken screens or screen less windows. Workshops will include: how to repair window screens; how to construct new window screens; and helpful tips on patching.

Qualified families will have an opportunity to sign up for hands-on assistance from Habitat for Humanity West Hawaii, and barbecue will be provided by Randy’s Huli Chicken and Ribs starting at 10 a.m.

AdvoCATS garage sale coming up

AdvoCATS will hold its semiannual garage sale from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 18 at 76-6256 Koko Olua Place.

The organization is accepting donations; call 327-3724 to make arrangements. Proceeds from the sale help the nonprofit organization spay and neuter the homeless cat population in West Hawaii.

VA loan seminar planned

Veterans Administration home loan benefits will be the topic of a free seminar at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 18 at the Elks Club, 74-5596 Pawai Place.

The class is hosted by Veterans United Home Loans of Hawaii. All Veterans and active duty personnel, reservists and National Guard members will learn about benefits that allow them to purchase a home up to $625,500 with no money down and other perks.

Express Admissions Day coming up

Hawaii Community College will host Express Admissions Day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 18 at the Manono campus in Hilo and the Palamanui campus in Kona.

Express Admissions Day is the fast and easy way to apply for the fall 2016 semester. Prospective students can complete an application, receive a student number, learn about financial aid and schedule the next steps in the enrollment process.

Though it’s not required, attendees of Express Admissions Day are encouraged to bring any records they may have that can help with placement testing scheduling. These records include high school transcripts, SAT and ACT scores, Smarter Balance Assessment scores and GED scores.

Plant sale planned

Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity, 77-165 Lako St., will hold a plant sale from 8 to 10 a.m. or until plants are sold out Saturday June 18.

Some of the many plants available will be are pineapple, various bromeliads, triangle palm, fan palm, dracaena, jade, ginger, plumeria, sansevieria, bird of paradise and assorted basket plants.

Elks Lodge hosts Flag Day, Father’s Day event

Kona Elks Lodge will hold its annual Flag Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Sunday, June 19, to be followed by a Father’s Day feast featuring Vern’s prime rib with potatoes, vegetables, Gorgonzola and walnut salad, homemade bread and berry cobbler.

Bosco will perform from noon to 3 p.m. Cost is $25.

Youth sailing camps planned

Big Island Sailing Foundation will host a beginning dinghy sailing and beach day camp for children ages 8-12 at Keauhou Bay. The first session runs June 20-24 and a second session is from June 27 through July 1. Day camps are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Certified instructors and lifeguards lead the shore and sailing programs. No prior sailing experience is required for the June camps, however, participants should be able to swim and be comfortable on the water. Booklets and life jackets are provided. Big Island Sailing Foundation is a charitable organization and requests $170 from new sailors or $150 for returning sailors. Scholarships are available.

Also, two weeks of dinghy and keelboat sailing for ages 12-18 are planned at Honokohau Harbor. Novice teens and intermediate sailors are welcome to join the July 11-15 session. Intermediate sailing and an intro to racing will be July 25- 29. The camps are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
