KAILUA-KONA — A brush fire that broke out on Monday was almost under control Wednesday afternoon as it burned land within Pohakuloa Training Area.

The fire started about noon Monday and firefighters were able to direct it away from the Waikii Ranch subdivision. As of Wednesday afternoon the fire was about 80 percent contained and they were preparing to cut the final part of the firebreak, said PTA Fire Chief Eric Moller.

So far the fire has burned about 400 acres, he said. No buildings are endangered or people hurt.

Moller said the acreage was Parker Ranch land for a century. He added that no live-fire training has taken place in the area that he is aware of, although munitions from previous wars are possible. As a result, they are not especially concerned about unexploded ordnance, he said.

Firefighters have come from the PTA units, the Hawaii County Fire Department and Parker Ranch, Moeller said.

A Hawaii Fire Department battalion chief originally estimated the fire at about 500 acres Monday evening.
