Trent Terada of the Boy Scouts of America, Aloha Council, Kona District, Troop 15, sponsored by SNI Church, painted address numbers on the curb of all the homes in the Kona Scenic subdivision and Keekee Estates. This will ensure faster response times from first responders such as the fire department, emergency medical services and police. In the past, finding an emergency location required searching for the address by looking at each house, the fence and the mail box. Some homes did not have a number displayed or had a number that was obscured by vegetation. Now all the homes in the two subdivisions have their address clearly posted within three feet of their driveway.
Terada undertook the task with help from his own troop, Troop 15, as well as some members of Troop 59, Kona Hongwanji and many friends including Ron and Marsha (Tanaka) Norvell and family. Ron Norvell is a former Scoutmaster for Troop 48, of the Westpark Council in Prairie Grove Arkansas who lent his expertise toward the success of the project.
As the four teams under Terada’s direction executed his plan to do all the numbering in one day, many were stopped by residents who expressed their gratitude.
Members of the Fire Department Station 6 Captain Cook came by to thank Terada. While on their way to find him, they said that they could easily see all the address numbers in the subdivisions.
Terada now needs to complete his Eagle Project Book and pass his Eagle Board of Review to become an Eagle Scout.
