KAILUA-KONA — The Hilo man whose arrest on multiple charges was credited to residents’ calls to officers about a reckless driver is now headed to Circuit Court.
Cory Young, 39, was arrested May 25 after multiple reports of reckless driving on Daniel K. Inouye Highway in South Kohala. When officers apprehended him, they determined he was wanted in an ongoing narcotics investigation and requested a search warrant.
Recovered were “a loaded 9 mm semi-automatic pistol, 29 unspent rounds of ammunition, 189.4 grams of methamphetamine packaged for distribution, 0.6 grams of cocaine, 18 hydrocodone pills, four morphine pills, 202.2 grams of marijuana packaged for distribution, and paraphernalia associated with the use and distribution of methamphetamine and marijuana,” police said.
Young was initially charged with first-degree methamphetamine trafficking, four counts of third-degree promotion of dangerous drugs, first-degree promotion of detrimental drugs, second-degree promotion of detrimental drugs, two counts of possessing drug paraphernalia, eight firearm offenses, reckless driving, driving without a license and driving without insurance. Some of the firearms charges stemmed from him being a convicted felon.
The earlier investigation led to charges of one count of first-degree promotion of detrimental drugs and three counts each of third-degree promotion of dangerous drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia.
He appeared in front of Judge Diana Van De Car on Thursday for a preliminary hearing in the Kohala District Court, who found probable cause for all 21 counts, including a second charge of possession of drug paraphernalia that had been added on Wednesday.
Young’s bond was set at $70,000, down from the initial $297,000 set and above the $20,000 requested by the defense. He’s scheduled to appear in front of Circuit Court Judge Ronald Ibarra at 11:30 a.m. June 11.
