HANA (AP) — A female died and another was critically injured when a vehicle plunged off the Hana Highway and landed 200 feet below on a shoreline.

HANA (AP) — A female died and another was critically injured when a vehicle plunged off the Hana Highway and landed 200 feet below on a shoreline.

The Maui Fire Department took a call on the crash at 4:42 p.m. Sunday. Emergency personnel responded to a cliff about four miles south of Hana across from St. Peter Catholic Mission.

The vehicle landed on lava rock surrounded by water.

Hana firefighters hiked down the cliff. Crews had to manually pry the occupants from the vehicle.

A fire department helicopter lifted the injured female to a landing zone on the lawn of a home. She was transferred to paramedics and flown to Maui Memorial Medical Center.

The body of the dead female was airlifted to the same landing zone and transferred to Maui police.
