HONOLULU (AP) — A man has been arrested after more than 30 dogs were rescued from filthy conditions at a Kahaluu home and one dog was found dead.
James Montgomery was arrested Saturday after police responded to the home to a report of dogs being disposed of in a trash bin. Officers arrived to find one dog in the bin that had been shot dead and another one alive, but needing veterinary attention, KHON-TV reported (https://bit.ly/25a3f8F).
Police obtained a search warrant and joined members of the Hawaiian Humane Society as they rescued 34 dogs from the residence.
“Really, really sad horrible conditions these dogs were living in,” said Christina Kam, a spokeswoman for the Hawaiian Humane Society. “They were living in their own filth, with no water, no food. The smell, it burns your eyes. It was very, very horrendous.”
Montgomery’s 20-year-old daughter, Lydia, who alerted police to the animals’ living conditions, said there were at least 12 dogs kept upstairs and several dozens more in the basement.
“The ones below, it was very slippery in there,” she told KHON-TV. “It was coated with dog feces. There were no windows, absolutely no light in there. It was pitch black.”
In 2005, Montgomery pleaded guilty to 55 counts of animal cruelty after more than 60 dogs were seized from the Kahaluu home. A judge’s order allowed the animals to be returned to the home, but Montgomery was instructed to sell them.
