Suicide prevention class planned

The Suicide Prevention class safeTALK will be presented from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Friday, May 27 at the community hale conference room at the West Hawaii Civic Center.

Anyone interested in learning how to provide support to a person at risk of suicide should consider attending this class free-of-charge.

Cancer support group meets

A cancer support group meets at 7 p.m. May 31 at Teshima’s restaurant in Honalo. People newly diagnosed with cancer and cancer survivors are welcome. Caregivers and supportive family members are also invited.

The group meets to share cancer related issues and to lend support to one another. Women are encouraged to learn about breast cancer risks and early detection.

Health clinics offer free services

Tropic Care 2016 will run free clinics on Hawaii Island.

Clinics will open from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Friday May 31 through June 4 and from 8:30 a.m. to noon June 4 at Ocean View Community Center and Ka‘u High School. Clinics are also offered from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Friday June 7-11 and from 8:30 a.m. to noon June 11 at Keaau High School.

Services that will be provided free include physical exams, dentistry, optometry (exams and glasses), medication review and provision of some medication and nutrition education. Patients will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis. Attendees should bring snack and water.

Tropic Care 2016 is a partnership between the U.S. Department of Defense and the state Hawaii District Health Office with many community partners.
