Thirty four youngsters ranging in age from 6-17 have been cast in “A Kidsummer Night’s Dream,” a new script by Los Angeles area playwright Susie Burke and Aloha Performing Arts Company Artistic Director Jerry Tracy, based on the works of William Shakespeare.
Appearing throughout the play are the “rude mechanicals” from “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” They are Bottom, Quince, Flute, Snout, Snug, and Starveling, and are portrayed by Miles Prado, Colten Clarke, Patrick Riehle, Manu Levine, Aaron Inda, and Ella Prado, respectively. Prado also plays Hamlet later in the play, and Riehle also subsequently appears as Mercutio.
Oliver Hai-Kelly and Mia Nguyen play Oberon and Titania, the king and queen of the fairies. Also in their court are the magical Puck, played by Ruby Mandini; the fairies Cobweb, Moth, Peaseblossom, and Mustardseed, played by Lainie Inda, Rihanna Goodspeed, Kaumea Lind-Strauss, and Camille Mandini. The fairy chorus consists of Melewai Hai-Kelly, Country Denis, Jade Edmoundson, and Vanessa Garringer.
The three witches from “Macbeth” also appear, and are played by Isabella Stith, Danni Sale, and Lotus Buss. Zea Levine and Riley Newton share the role of Phebe, from “As You Like It.” Other characters are: Celia, Minami Asbjornson; Rosalind and Tybalt, Ariana Rose; Sylvius, Emily Carstens; Lysander and Romeo, Caiden Mireles; Helena, Tabitha Robbins; Demetrius, Noelani Loughery-Kawaihoa; Hermia, Alessa Stephens; Sampson, Kira Edmoundson; Gregory, Sophia Burgess; Theseus, Leilani Penaloza; and Hippolyta, Zion Perrington. In addition, certain cast members play court dancers and various background performers.
“A Kidsummer Night’s Dream” will be performed at the Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu June 10-12 and June 17-19. Friday and Saturday shows are at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday matinees are at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for senior citizens and young adults, and $5 for children.
The production is directed by Tracy, assisted by Tabitha Robbins. Producers are John Holliday and Felicity Johnson, and designers include Judith Tringali, set; Renee Monell, costumes; Martha Stephens, props; Riley Newton, sound; Justyn Toyama, lighting; and Zea Levine, hair and makeup. Music director is Marinella Savarese, choreographer is Juanita Finkenberg, stage manager is Catherine Williams, house manager is Trish Rose, concessions manager is Paula Cornwell, and box office manager is Sharyn Toyama.
