Bernice Santos
Bernice Santos, 68, of Honokaa died May 6, 2016, at Hale Hoola Hamakua in Honokaa. Born Aug. 13, 1947, in Hana, Maui, she was a homemaker and a member of the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Honokaa.
Friends may call at 5 p.m. May 19 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Honokaa for a 7 p.m. Mass. Cremation to follow at Dodo Mortuary Crematory. An urn committal will be held at a later date.
She is survived by daughter, Bernadette Ku of Wailuku, Maui; stepdaughter, Barbara (Eugene) Valencia of Laupahoehoe; brothers, Ernest Pua, Chester (Dorothy) Pua, Richard (Brenda) Pua, and Larry (Leimomi) Pua, all of Maui, Patrick Pua of Paauilo; sister, Caroline Pua of Maui; six grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Carlos Ellazar
Carlos Bergado Ellazar, 85, of Keaau died April 16, 2016, at Life Care Center of Hilo. Born in Urdeneta, Pangasinan, Philippines, he was a retired core sampler operator with the former Puna Sugar Co., and later became an independent papaya farmer.
Friends may call at 5 p.m. May 20 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for a 6 p.m. service. Friends may also call at 8 a.m. May 21 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for a 10 a.m. service, followed by burial at Homelani Memorial Park. The family requests casual attire be worn.
He is survived by wife, Natividad Ellazar of Keaau; sons, Marcos Ellazar of Hilo, Marcial (Susan) Ellazar of Charlotte, N.C., Romulo (Maribel) Ellazar of Apple Valley, Calif., Igmedio (Estela) Ellazar of Keaau; daughter, Emerita (Samson) Ellazar-Hernandez of Keaau; brothers, Martin (Teodora) Ellazar of Kurtistown, Gregorio Ellazar of Virginia Beach, Va.; sisters, Luisa Ramos of the Philippines, Teresita Pascual of Maui, Anita Calamaza of the Philippines; 10 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

John Kelty
John Vincent Kelty, 84, of Kailua-Kona died March 18, 2016. Born Aug. 19, 1931, in Woodmere, N.Y., he was a Marine Corps Veteran, manager and owner of several car dealerships in Long Island, N.Y., then retired to Hawaii where he worked at Kmart.

Harold Fernandez
Harold Richard Fernandez, 79, of Ookala died May 2, 2016, at The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu. Born July 13, 1936, in Hilo, he was a retired service truck driver for the former Hamakua Sugar Co. and a security guard for Global Protective Service at the Laupahoehoe transfer station. He was a member of the Paauilo Nutrition Center and the Laupahoehoe Senior Citizens Club.
Friends may call from 8 to 9:15 a.m. May 21 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Laupahoehoe for a 9:30 a.m. Mass. Burial will follow at Ookala Catholic Cemetery. Casual attire is requested.

Mervin Kahumoku Jr.
Mervin Louis Kahumoku Jr., 62, of Kailua-Kona died May 11, 2016, at home. Born Sept. 7, 1953, in Honolulu, he served in the military, was a firefighter for the federal/military and State of Hawaii Airport Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting Unit and was fire chief of the Kona International Airport Fire Department. He was also a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He is survived by wife, Emmajean; sons, Willie (Natalie) Kahumoku of Reno, Nev.; Mervin (Aisling) Kahumoku III of Logan, Utah; Duke (Kathryn) Kahumoku of Anchorage, Alaska; daughters, Kahealani (Jonathan) Tomberlin of Suwanee, Ga.; Keiki (Chris) Patricoski of Nokomis, Fla.; Lahela (Byron) Hatley of Palmer, Alaska; Puanani (Herb) Weichert of Valdez, Alaska; brothers, Harrison (Herberlene) Kahumoku of Kaneohe, Oahu; Van Dewey (Pattie) Kahumoku, Makana Kahumoku and Kaulana Kahumoku, all of Honolulu; sisters, Lehua (Darrell) Travis, Leo (Allan) Nakoa, Lii Naeole, Starlani Kahumoku, all of Honolulu; 20 grandchildren.

Jerry Kaipo Pakele, 75, of Hilo died April 26, 2016, at Pohai Malama. Born May 13, 1940, in Hilo, he was an employee of Pueo Poi Factory and a member of The Gospel of Alpha and Omega Church.

Lucinda “Cindy” Joelle Dart Rengulbai, 62, of Waimea died April 28, 2016, at home. Born April 21, 1954, in Laupahoehoe, she was a retired nurse for Hale Hoola Hamakua and a private home health nurse. She was also a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Honokaa, the Ahahui Kaahumanu – Chapter II; the Visayans of Hamakua and the Waimea Senior Club.
