Third-graders in Mrs. Coon’s class at Kealakehe Elementary School raised more than $350 to help rebuild Shusti Primary School’s library that was destroyed by Hurricane Winston on the Island of Vitu Levu, Fiji.
They started a Heelys for Fiji service project. Heelys were not allowed at school, so class decided to sell passes to kids who wanted to wear their Heelys. Hearing about the category 5 hurricane made them want to help. In March and April they sold more than 40 passes that allowed students to wear their Heelys at recess. The entire class helped out by drawing a zone on the playground with sidewalk chalk where the wheeled shoes could be worn. They also directed kids to wear the passes they purchased and made signs advertising the fundraiser.
