Konawaena girls basketball banquet

The Konawaena girls basketball program will celebrate their state championship on May 14 at Hale Halewai from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tickets are $20 (presale) or $25 (at the door). The price Includes dinner, celebration and entertainment. Tickets can be purchased from any player, parent, or coach.

Kai Ehitu Regatta

The Kai Ehitu Outrigger Team’s 34th annual Regatta will take place on May 21 at Kailua Pier. Opening ceremonies are slated for 7:30 a.m., followed by the first race at 8 a.m. The event is free and will feature food booths, local farmers, craft vendors and more.

Golf Tournaments

Kohala Center golf tourney

On May 28 the Kohala Center will host the inaugural Planet Hawaii Golf Tournament at Four Seasons. The event includes golf, prizes, a post-tournament gathering and heavy pupus.

The tournament will be played as a two-person, select drive, low net score format. Three strokes available for purchase at registration. For more information, contact Keawe Liu at 987-1728.

Nobu Yamauchi Memorial Golf Tournament

The 14th annual Nobu Yamauchi Memorial Golf Tournament will be held on June 10 at the Hapuna Golf Course. Entry fee is $150 and the event will have a shotgun start at 9 a.m. shotgun start. The price includes green fee, cart, par-3 closest to the pin, team prizes and lunch at Arnys’s at the Hapuna Golf course.

Funds raised will be used for the Nobu Yamauchi RBI Organization and partial scholarships for RBI players who will be attending college.

Team net prizes will be awarded randomly. There will also be a special prize for the best team low gross. The grand prize this year will be a Las Vegas vacation package which includes air travel certificates and a five-day, four-night stay at the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino. This prize will be awarded to the low net team that finishes 14th overall.

Other prizes include MLB, NFL, and NBA tickets with two-night hotel stays, golf equipment, complimentary golf, restaurant certificates, and much more.

Deadline to enter is June 5th. Entry forms are at the Hilo Municipal Golf course or can be obtained by emailing Wayne Yamauchi at yamauchiw002@hawaii.rr.com.

Tee Off for Kids Golf Tournament

Boys & Girls Club Big Island is hosting the 10th annual Tee Off for Kids Golf Tournament Fundraiser at Mauna Lani Bay’s Francis H. I’i Brown South Course on June 11. Registration deadline is May 23.

The event offers the community a fun way to help the youth of Hawaii Island. Participants can make a difference by becoming a sponsor, playing in the golf tournament, contributing prizes, live auction items, monetary donations or volunteering.

Big Island junior swing team

Players ages 10-17 are invited to train to play golf with Coach Laurie Hillyard, an LPGA teaching professional, at the Big Island Country club every Tuesday and Thursday from June 7 to July 28. Sessions run from 12:30-5:30 p.m. and cost is $75 per session with 2-6 players max.

Players must know the basics of the game, have proper fitted clubs and be able to walk nine holes. Each session combines golf specific fitness, swing skill development and challenging drills with a two-hour coach on course playing experience.

Rough water swims

Hapuna Roughwater

The Hapuna Roughwater swim will take place on June 18 at 8 a.m. To register for the 1-mile race, go to FLPregister.com/178. There is discounted pricing for early sign-up.

There will be a 400-meter keiki swim race, followed by main event. T-shirts with sign-up guaranteed through June 4 registration. Water patrol volunteers are still needed. Contact Ed Doherty with any questions at Eddoherty1@me.com.

King’s Swim

Kona Aquatics will be hosting the 22nd Annual King’s Swim — a 1.2-mile course which begins at Kailua Bay and ends at Kamakahonu Bay, directly in front of King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel on July 4 at 8 a.m. No wetsuits or fins permitted; only USA Swimming approved suits permitted.

Applications are available at Bikeworks. A non-refundable entry fee of $15 must accompany the application. Registration deadline is June 27. Late registration is at Kailua Pier on race day from 6:30-7:30 a.m. at $20 per entry.

Volunteers with kayaks, surfboards, or stand-up paddle boards wishing to join our safely patrol are welcome; please report to the pier before 7:30 a.m. For more information call Steve Borowski at 334-0083.

Keauhou Canoe Club scholarships

Keauhou Canoe Club is offering two $1,500 scholarships — the James F. Rodgers Academic Scholarship and the Mike Haines Merit Achievment scholarship. To date, Keauhou Canoe Club has awarded over $16,000 to well deserving candidates who have continued their pursuit of higher education.
