Oahu man sentenced to 20 years for child pornography offenses

An Oahu man was sentenced Thursday to serve 20 years in prison for transporting and possessing child pornography.

Senior U.S. District Judge Helen Gillmor also ordered that when Michael K. Kormanik, 54, of Kalihi, Oahu, completes the prison term he serve supervised release for life. Kormanik was charged with and pleaded guilty to two counts transportation of child pornography and one count possessing child pornography.

As part of his federal conviction, Kormanik will also be required to register as a sex offender.

Florence T. Nakakuni, United States Attorney for the District of Hawaii, said that according to information produced in court, Kormanik’ s home computer contained more than 3,000 images and more than 400 videos of child pornography, and an IP address associated with Kormanik on a peer-to-peer file sharing network also had images of child pornography.

Kormanik faced a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years because he had a prior conviction for sexual assault of a minor, related to his repeated sexual abuse of a 10-year-old boy. Kormanik also admitted having previously sexually abused two other young boys.
