The Hawaii Forest Industry Association has selected three jurors for its upcoming Hawaii’s Woodshow.
The show opens Sept. 17 and continues through Oct. 2 at the Honolulu Museum of Art Gallery School at Linekona. Admission is free.
Jurors for the show are Betty Scarpino, Duane Preble, and R.W. “Rollo” Scheurenbrand.
Scarpino, a contemporary artist, sculptor and woodturner, is recognized as one of the masters of the genre. Her work is held in private, public and museum collections throughout the world. She works full-time teaching, writing, sculpting and printmaking from her home in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Preble, an artist, author, and teacher, is a University of Hawaii professor emeritus who has taught a variety of courses, including introduction to the visual arts, art history, photography, drawing, color and design. In 1969 he was awarded a UH Excellence in Teaching Award and in 1975 was selected for listing in Outstanding Educators of America. He has exhibited paintings, photographs and sculpture since the early 1960s. After 30 years of teaching, he retired from the university to further his own art and to help the arts become a catalyst for effective public education.
Scheurenbrand, an Oahu luthier, began his woodworking career in the mid-1970s as a carpenter. From there he moved on to cabinetry, furniture building, woodturning and eventually found what has become his passion: building stringed instruments. Working with Hawaii-grown woods and other tonewoods, he creates one-of-a-kind instruments emphasizing tonal characteristics, playability, craftsmanship and aesthetics.
Hawaii’s Woodshow, created to promote an appreciation for the variety of Hawaii-grown woods, attracts talented woodworkers throughout the state and abroad who submit entries showcasing the versatility and beauty of Hawaii woods across design disciplines including furniture, woodturning, sculpture and musical instruments.
Entries are judged on exacting criteria including “Inspiration of Design” and “Excellence of Implementation.” The judges will create pools of entries from each category after an initial round of judging from which the awardees are selected.
Awards typically include: Best of Show, as many as five First Place awards in various categories, Honorable Mentions, Spirit of the Show, Kent Award, Artist’s Choice Award, and People’s Choice Award.
