Hawaii Volcanoes National Park May artist-in-residence Emma Stibbon will display and discuss her work and offer two public workshops next week.
Stibbon, a visual artist noted for her dramatic and extreme monochrome landscape drawings, is from the United Kingdom.
Stibbon went to art school at Goldsmiths, London and received a research fine arts master’s degree from the University of the West of England, Bristol. Drawing from environments that are undergoing transformation or change is at the heart of her practice and dramatic monochrome drawings.
“The volcanic terrain of Hawaii is a place of natural and psychological uncertainty. My aim is to suggest a sense of the strength, resilience and yet ultimate fragility of terrain around the volcanoes by walking, drawing from observation and gathering other research in the field,” said Stibbon.
She will display and discuss her work at an After Dark in the Park program 7 p.m. May 17 at Kilauea Visitor Center.
She will also offer two public workshops, featuring plein air techniques at 11 a.m. on Saturdays May 14 and 21 in the lobby of the 1932 Administration Building (also known as the Ohia Wing), located between visitor center and the Volcano House on Crater Rim Drive.

The artist-in-residence program is presented in cooperation with the nonprofit National Parks Arts Foundation. All of the programs are free.
