KAILUA-KONA — What was your reaction after you heard ‘Peter Boy’ Kema’s parents were arrested?
“Talking with my co-workers today, the question between us all was if there are people put in position to get to the bottom of things, especially on an island this small, why did it take so long? It seems like maybe people didn’t do things they should have, or they didn’t have the right people doing the things that should have been done.”
— Laura Duquette, Kailua-Kona
“My question is, does (Aunty Rose Makuakane) exist or not? Is she fictitious or is there a real person out there with that name? If the police have the proof, my belief is arrest the person. At the same time, innocent until proven guilty. I believe in the law, but I don’t think they get it right all the time.”
— Ray Crespin, Holualoa
“I’m not going to say who is guilty and who is not, but I just felt so bad for this little boy who has never been found. I can’t judge if his parents actually killed him, but it really needs resolution. I’m praying the guilty parties come forth, and if they’ve done it, that they would confess to that.”
— Yolanda Olson, Kailua-Kona
“I can’t believe it’s taken 19 years for the police to arrest the parents; 19 years? Nothing has changed from the first few weeks. The whole situation is strange.”
— Monty Cullen, Honomalino
“It’s a tragic story. The delay is striking. My basic response was, assuming the parents are responsible, at least now it’s coming to a head.”
— Farley Jones, South Kona
