The Honokaa High School Jazz Band will celebrate International Jazz Day Saturday with a concert at Honokaa People’s Theatre.

The Honokaa High School Jazz Band will celebrate International Jazz Day Saturday with a concert at Honokaa People’s Theatre.

Under the direction of Gary Washburn, the band will perform at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults, and $3 for students, and can be purchased at the door.

The Honokaa High School Jazz Band has been recognized by the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation as being an outstanding school for Music Education. Honokaa High School was one of 36 schools out of 22,000 eligible programs in the U.S. to receive the Grammy Signature Schools Award. Their director, Washburn, has been recognized as a Living Treasure of Hawaii for his work as a music educator and has received a Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction award.

In November 2011, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) officially designated April 30 as International Jazz Day in order to highlight jazz and its diplomatic role of uniting people in all corners of the globe.
