Basically Books is hosting three book events next Friday in Hilo.
At 6 p.m. May 6, Mary Ikeda discusses her new book, “A Harvest of Plantation Pidgin, The Japanese Way,” which examines the integration of Japanese words into the plantation pidgin language that developed earlier among the Chinese, Portuguese and Hawaiian workers.
At 6:15 p.m., Akinori Imai discusses “Our Nostalgic Heritage, Growing Up In A Place Once-Called Olaa,” a memoir of growing up in the plantation town in Puna. His second book, “And Yet, Another Phase of Life,” travels to Honolulu and further adventures.
Wayne Subica ends the night discussing his book, “Hawaii Plantation Museum,” at 6:30 p.m. Subica is the collector and curator of the Hawaii Plantation Museum in Papaikou. An avid historian, he is the writer and publisher of books on local history including “Historic Hoolulu Park,” “Hawaii Sugar Days,” “Big Island Mom and Pops Vols. I, II and III,” and “Hawaii Plantations Pay System.”
The 6-7 p.m. event is free at Basically Books, 160 Kamehameha Avenue.
