Waimea Country School fifth-grader Malia Mitchell was the grand prize winner for the Big Island during the 17th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Poetry Awards held recently in Hilo.
Sponsored by the International Peace Poem Project, 202 entries were received from students at nine Big Island schools. Of those, six were chosen for the Golden Circle Honor. Mitchell was given the Grand Prize from that group.
“When I heard my name called, I thought ‘Wow!’” said Mitchell. “I like to write and having this recognition makes me want to write more.”
Mitchell received a Certificate of Special Recognition signed by Gov. David Ige, as well as a painting contributed by Sargent’s Fine Art Gallery in Lahaina, Maui.
