Scholarships available from Keauhou Canoe Club

Keauhou Canoe Club is offering two $1,500 scholarships. To date, Keauhou Canoe Club has awarded over $16,000 to well deserving candidates who have continued their pursuit of higher education.

The James F. Rogers Academic Scholarship is awarded to a outrigger canoe paddler who has participated in team paddling for at least one year and has shown excellence in academics and contributions to the community including paddling, school, and community service and activities, and is pursuing continuing education at a trade school, community college, university or college program.

The Mike Haines Merit Achievement Scholarship is awarded to the student has participated in organized outrigger paddling and has exhibited good scholarship throughout school and has been active in serving others at school, church and/or community activities including employment. Leadership skills, responsibility, integrity and dedication to successful activities will be considered. Applicant must be pursuing continuing their education at a trade school, community college, university or college program.

Application will include paddling experience, letters from your paddling coach, in addition to a counselor, teacher, or administrator will be required. In addition, a complete transcript for high school work and SAT and ACT scores will be part of the application. Couch to 5K program with Big Island Running Company

Big Island Running Company is offering a free Couch to 5K training program starting May 3 at 5 p.m. at the Alii Drive store. This 10-week program is designed to take beginners from the couch to finishing the Club Rehab 5k on July 9 at the Royal Kona Resort.

No prior running experience is necessary. Runs will take place on Tuesday and Thursday at 5 p.m. and Saturday morning at 6:30 a.m., although runs can be completed individually as well. For more information, call or email Melissa at 327-9333 or melissa@bigislandrunningcompany.com.

Fitness Expo Entry Forms Available

Entry forms for competitors wishing to participate in the Transmission Technology Summer Fitness Expo at the Old Kona Airport Park baseball field on June 25 are now avaiable at transtechhawaii.com

The event will have classes for both men and women, with short, medium and tall divisions for body builders who will compete for trophies on the main stage. First, second and third place trophies will be awarded in all classes.

Featured guests will include IFBB Pro Physique Body Builder Gerald Saragosa and special guest poser Danny DeJesus during the 10 a.m to 3 p.m. show.

The Fitness Expo is part of the Transmission Technology 2016 Summer Car Show at the baseball field and will include vendor tents and food service for the 3,000 expected spectators during the day long celebration. Entry forms for the car show and information about vendor space rentals are also available on the transtechhawaii.com website.

All proceeds for the event will be donated to Teach for America, a national teacher corps of recent college graduates who commit two years to teach and to effect change in under-resourced urban and rural public schools on the Big Island and around the country.

Mile One of Queens’ Lei & Keiki Dash

Join PATH, West Hawaii Rotary Club and LavaKids on April 23 for the dedication of Mile One of Queens’ Lei and a Keiki Dash. There will be a 1-mile and 2-mile fun walk/run. Runners will meet at the West Hawaii Civic Center at 8:30 a.m. for the dedication. Registration will take place at 9 a.m. A 100-yard keiki dash will be held at 9:30 a.m. and the 1-mile and 2-mile walk/run will begin at 9:40 a.m.
