Hanohano O Kona lecture schedule outlined

Kona Historical Society has been providing the Hanohano O Kona (Honoring Kona) lecture series for more than five years. The free lectures are offered from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on the last Wednesday of every month at West Hawaii Civic Center.

Topics planned for the rest of the year are:

April 25: The Kona Field System of Agriculture presented by Noa Kekuewa Lincoln

May 25: Kona Ranching and Kona Cowboys, presented by Kona Historical Society

June 29: Na Mele Paniolo O Kona, presented by Allen Wall, Daniel Akaka and Alan Akaka

July 27: After Dark Out of the Park: The Establishment of Hawaii National Park Historical Slideshow, presented by Jadelyn Nakamura

Aug. 31: Caring for Family Treasures, presented by Malia Van Heukelem

Sept. 28: Alii Wahine: Female Leadership and Sacred Places of Ancient Kona, presented by Pualani Lincoln Maielua

Oct. 26: Communities of Quilters on Hawaii Island, presented by Loretta Woodard, Linda Hee and Deborah Dunn

Free Day of Mindfulness workshop planned

An opportunity to learn more about mindfulness will be presented from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m Saturday at the Kohala Hongwanji Buddhist Temple in Kapaau. The Day of Mindfulness will be led by monastics from Plum Village, a secluded Buddhist monastery in France.

Two members of the order, Phap Nguyen and Phap Khoi will offer the community a chance to experience mindfulness, including guided sitting and walking meditations, mindful (silent) eating, Dharma discussion, and a time for questions and answers.

Participants are asked to bring their own lunch, and are invited to join the monastics in their vegan diet for that meal. Water will be provided. There is no charge to attend. Donations are requested.

Free estate planning seminars

Aloha Insurance is hosting free seminars to discuss estate planning for Millennials and Baby Boomers.

Rebecca Logan, Peter Amelotte and estate planning attorney John Roth will lead the seminars on Monday at the Aloha Insurance office on Walua Road.

The Baby Boomers seminar is from 10-11 a.m. Monday. It will focus on how to get the most out of Medicare and plan an estate to be easily managed by loved ones in the event of incapacity or death.

The Millennials seminar is from 5-6 p.m. and will focus on how to make sure your young family is taken care of if you are unable to continuing caring for them yourself and how life insurance may play a role in your plan.

Ms. Wheelchair to speak about diversity

Ms. Wheelchair America 2016, Dr. Alette Coble-Temple, will speak at a Business Empowerment Breakfast from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday at the VFW Post located Behind Kona Locksmith off of Kaiwi Street. Businesses and organizations as well as the general public are invited to share in the promotion of hiring people with disabilities.

The event was put together through the efforts of agencies and businesses of the Hawaii County’s Workforce Solutions Consortium — West Hawaii to promote awareness and advocacy in the workplace. They take an active role in adding to the diversity in the workplace by sharing with employers ways to discover power of employing people with disabilities. This target population is extremely loyal and have the lowest turnover rates off all workforce populations. Additionally, the Consortium is involved with changing the way our general community thinks about workplace diversity.

The free Starbucks coffee continental breakfast will include fruits and pastries.
