A 29-year-old Puna man has died from injuries he suffered in an April 12 two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Kilauea Avenue and Kawailani Street in Hilo.
He has been identified as Ryan W. Devaney, of Pahoa, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
Responding to a 4:51 a.m. call, South Hilo patrol and Traffic Enforcement Unit officers determined that Devaney was operating a 2001 Lincoln four-door sedan and traveling west on Kawailani Street when police say he ran the red light and was struck by a 2014 Peterbuilt rubbish truck traveling south on Kilauea Avenue and being operated by a 35-year-old Pahoa man, according to police.
Devaney was taken to Hilo Medical Center and was then flown in critical condition to The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu, where he died at 6:31 p.m.
The driver of the rubbish truck was not injured.
Police do not believe that alcohol, drugs or speed were factors.
Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a negligent homicide investigation and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
Anyone with information about the crash should call Officer Keith Nacis at 961-8119 or the department’s nonemergency line at 935-3311.
This is the eighth traffic fatality on Hawaii Island public roadways this year compared with seven at this time in 2015.
