No smart in smart meters
Ron Becker’s “Hawaiian Electric’s smart grid bad idea” letter, was spot on.
I’m a staunch fan of the late night/early morning radio program, “Coast to Coast AM.” For those not familiar with it, topics are set by the host, and one of the most popular topics is electromagnetic pulse generating devices, and emittance from our sun.
Pundits on the topic have been many over the last couple decades I’ve been listening to the show. They all have denounced practices that have become a daily habit most of us do, i.e. placing phone chargers near us in the bedroom; cellphones in pockets, and against our heads for prolonged periods of time; sleeping near the smart meters mounted just outside our bedroom’s wall; gadget-charging units around us at our desks; Bluetooth headphone units; fluorescent lighting; etc.
Many callers on C2C tell their own anecdotes of installing shields between these smart meters and the bedroom, yielding positive results in their overall health. Even the host of the show, George Noory, blames his sister’s brain tumor on her cellphone, he says, which was always on her head. Callers relate similar stories. Testicular cancer caused by cellphones too near the genitals. The list of “greater than chance” anecdotes are overwhelming.
My meter is attached just outside of the “foot” of my bedroom. I have charging gadgets around me at my desk. The only cellphone I have is always in my truck — strictly for emergency purposes. In five years of service, I’ve only made two calls on that phone. I got rid of fluorescent lighting long ago. “Instant on” gadgetry on my TV is disconnected when not watching. I am guilty of having a landline phone with a wireless hand-held unit — and they do emit that common EMP.
Bottomline: Ron’s not crying “wolf.” “Smart” meters aren’t healthy, and shouldn’t be introduced into our lives.

1 real difference
between Trump, Sanders
Is there a real difference between Sanders and Trump?
They appeal to different segments of the population and propose diametrically opposite changes that could change our way of life. Both men’s proposals are widely popular, and widely opposed. There is one difference, and it’s not what you are thinking. Sanders’s proposals cannot happen without enabling legislation. Many of Trump’s proposals can be initiated by executive action, requiring legislative action to undo. Legislative action inevitably takes a long time.

Online tax filing a breeze
In response to Mr. Brock Miller’s April 15 letter to the editor, “Taxpayers always get short end,” we have filed both federal and state tax returns online for a number of years.
Our 2015 state return was filed the last week in March and on this past Monday, April 11, we received our refund from the State of Hawaii. Mr. Miller might want to give this a shot next year, it’s surprisingly easy and affordable.
