Between April 4 through Sunday, Hawaii Island police arrested 12 people on charges of driving under the influence of an intoxicant, four of whom were involved in traffic crashes.

Between April 4 through Sunday, Hawaii Island police arrested 12 people on charges of driving under the influence of an intoxicant, four of whom were involved in traffic crashes.

So far this year, there have been 301 DUI arrests compared with 260 during the same period last year, an increase of 15.8 percent.

The number of arrests remained flat in Ka’u, with five arrests, Hamakua, with four arrests, and North Kohala, with zero. South Kohala officers made two arrests, bringing the total so far to 20. The most islandwide were reported in Kona, with six arrests made, bringing the total to 118 so far this year.

There have been 395 major accidents so far this year compared with 410 during the same period last year, a decrease of 3.7 percent.

So far this year, there have been six fatal crashes, including one with multiple deaths, resulting in seven fatalities. Last year there were five fatal crashes (one of which had multiple deaths), resulting in seven fatalities. This represents an increase of 20 percent for fatal crashes.
