A woman was killed Saturday night in a single-car crash in Puna’s Nanawale Estates subdivision.

A woman was killed Saturday night in a single-car crash in Puna’s Nanawale Estates subdivision.

The woman was a passenger in a mid-size car that apparently ran off Nanawale Boulevard, struck trees and snapped a utility pole before coming to a rest 5 feet below the roadway, acording to the Hawaii Fire Department, which responded to the 8:21 p.m. alarm.

When fire rescue personnel arrived at the scene about 8:34 p.m., they found a man lying on the ground next to the car who identified himself as a passenger and said the driver had fled the scene prior to the arrival of police and medics. However, witnesses said there may have been others in the car.

A search of the area using thermal imaging equipment found a lifeless woman about 10 feet from the car in thick brush.

Police have not yet released the woman’s identity.
