Kiwanis Club meets
Kiwanis Club of Kailua-Kona will meet at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the upstairs room at Humpy’s in Coconut Grove Marketplace on Alii Drive. All visiting Kiwanis and prospective members are invited. Andrea Furuli of Hawaii Community Foundation will speak.
Kiwanis looks to serve the community by conducting service projects that respond to identified needs, especially related to children.

Recycle workshop set
Registration is open for the 11th annual Art &Science of Recycling (ASR) program where K-12 students create art or functional forms with reusable/recyclable materials.
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) connections are encouraged in the process of collecting, experimenting and working with various paper, plastic and metal materials. Student projects from schools, homeschools and community groups on Hawaii Island are displayed during April. Completed ASR projects will be listed for Environmental Education Week on April 17-23.
RH’s popular series of Home Composting Workshops will be offered in Kailua-Kona and Waimea. Workshop on April 23 from 10 a.m. to noon at West Hawaii Civic Center will be taught by Tamar and Cameron Atsumi. On May 21, the 10 a.m. to noon session will be taught by Samantha Robinson and Noah Dodd at their Hawaii Green Earth Farm in Waimea.
These informational workshops are open to beginners and those wishing to learn more about the basics of composting using materials from your kitchen and yard which reduce waste and improve soil.

Celebrate Earth Day at Pohakuloa
A virtual lava tube tour and a chance to see one of Hawaii’s few spiked native plants are two of the many highlights at this year’s U.S. Army Garrison-Pohakuloa Earth Day celebration, here.
The free event will take place from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. April 22 and will include hands-on activities and educational displays. The Army’s Natural Resources team will highlight the Army’s management of threatened and endangered species through a number of displays, games and garden tours. During garden tours, visitors will have the opportunity to view some of the unique plants managed at PTA, such as the spiny popolo-one of Hawaii’s few spiked native plants. There will also be a series of talks on the biology and natural ecology of the area.
