Kahilu Theatre will be hosting auditions for its upcoming Kahilu Production, “Grease the Musical” on from 5 to 8 p.m. April 22 and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 23 in Waimea.
Auditionees are asked to bring in two pieces of musical theater sheet music and be prepared to sing. It is preferred that one of the pieces is from Grease. Those who do not have access to the sheet music from Grease, can learn a small piece of the song during the audition. In addition to 17 principal and supporting roles, the theater is looking for a dance chorus and a singing chorus as well as one older woman (age 40 to 60) to play the teacher. Dancers should attend on the last hour of each audition day: 7 to 8 p.m. April 22 and 12 to 1 p.m. April 23.
Anyone cast in Waimea Community Theatre’s “Little Mermaid” is welcome to audition for the chorus of Grease, despite rehearsal and performance conflicts.
Half-day rehearsals will begin May 23, and from May 26 on, when school is out, longer rehearsals will begin (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.), although calls will be staggered throughout the day. Actors will not be required to be there all day at that point.
“Grease the Musical” will be directed by Beth Dunnington director of the Kahilu Youth Troupe and a stage director for Hawaii Performing Arts Festival), who also directed “Godspell,” “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” “Broadway in Hawaii,” and “Back to Broadway.” She will be joined by NYC guest Musical Director Phil Kadet (HPAF musical director); choreographer Angela Alforque (Parker School artistic director); and vocal coach Val Underwood (HPAF artistic director). The creative team will be looking for actors, singers, and dancers to play Rydell High’s senior class of 1959, so performers auditioning for Grease need to be able to realistically portray high school students.
“Grease the Musical” will be performed 7 p.m. June 17, 7 p.m. June 18 and 4 p.m. June 19 at Kahilu Theatre.
