Richard Gentei Diedrichs, Sonia R. Martinez, William Helbing and Cathy Hammond will be featured during Kona Stories Book Shop’s Words and Wine event at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Keauhou Shopping Center.
Diedrichs, author of “Living in Blue Sky Mind: Basic Buddhist Teachings for a Happy Life” grew up in Los Angeles and has edited travel and health magazines in Seattle, worked as an editor at the schools of engineering and public health at the University of California, Berkeley, and then taught in public elementary schools in the San Francisco Bay area.
The author of four books, Diedrichs was ordained a Zen priest in 1984 by Genki Takabayashi Roshi. His new book explains and describes the practices of Buddhism for teens and adults — both the curious and the already practicing. He does this via simple lessons, anecdotes of personal transformation, and reflective questions to guide the reader along Buddha’s enlightened way. Currently, he is a Dharma teacher at Daifukuji Zen Temple in Hawaii.
From Soup to Nuts is a cookbook packed with more than 77 recipes as well as tips and tricks from one of the Big Island’s most beloved food writers, Sonia R. Martinez:
Martinez was born in Cuba and has always been drawn to tropical climes and cuisines. For the past 20-plus years she has lived on Hawaii Island in a beautiful rain forest where she grows herbs, collects cookbooks and plays with recipes.
Sonia’s passion for food and cooking led her to own kitchen/gourmet shops and cooking schools first in Orangeburg, South Carolina, and later in the Miami area. After moving to Hawaii, she and hers on operated the Akaka Falls Inn, a B&B, cooking school, gift shop and deli/gourmet shop in Honomu for several years.
Paauilo resident Helbing lives in Paauilo and continues to investigate the reasons for his being anywhere. Despite having a philosophical background, he has managed to survive in a world where everyone appears to know more than he does. His interests range from waking up and going to sleep and all that happens between.
“The Wisdom Project” is the product of discussions held since 2006 about topics at the heart of the human condition. Participants in the discussions came from all walks of life and topics include meaning, the self, the ego, consciousness, feelings, rationality, being open, beliefs, enlightenment, and spirituality. While the book is designed to generate creative thinking, more importantly its purpose is to move the reader to engage in meaningful, ongoing conversations about these issues central to our humanity.
Hammond, Ph.D., Q.M.E., is a licensed clinical psychologist, author and musician who lives in La Jolla, California. She co-wrote “Movement as a Way to Agelessness: A Guide to Trager Mentastics” and taught the Trager Approach internationally for 25 years. She also has a private practice with specialties in pain management and developmental disorders.
“What could be freer? What is less effort?” are the feelings that can be developed through Mentastics. It is a coined expression meaning “mental gymnastics.” These simple movements can benefit everyone and aid in recovery from a wide range of ailments.
Following a more formal book presentation from each author there will be a Q&A session. The event concludes at 8 p.m.
