Hawaii’s acoustic guitar trio Kohala will perform original compositions from their recent Na Hoku Hanohano Award-nominated release, “Mana Road,” plus fan favorites from previous recordings Sunday at Kahilu Theatre.
The performance will be predominantly instrumental, with some vocals by Kohala member Rupert Tripp Jr. accompanied by dancer Keahealani Tripp. Kohala’s music is a blend of island, folk and jazz. The intimate evening of acoustic guitar music gets underway at 7 p.m.
Each of Kohala’s members has made a significant contribution to Hawaii’s music history. Charles Michael Brotman won the inaugural Hawaiian Grammy Award, a Producer’s Award for “Slack Key Guitar Volume 2.” Tripp is from a prominent musical family from Hilo, founded Nalu!, and is a solo Christian music composer and recording artist. Charles Recaido contributed to Hawaii’s first Grammy Award-winning recording, was also a member of Summer, a band that was in the center of the Hawaiian music renaissance during the 1970s, and has been involved with countless recordings as a performer, engineer or producer.
The Palm Records event will be held in Kahilu Theatre’s Luce Studio. Tickets are $28 and can be purchased online at www.kahilutheatre.org.
