KAILUA-KONA — A high wind warning is in effect until 9 a.m. Wednesday for the Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea summits.

West winds of 45 to 75 mph with gusts to 85 mph are forecast for the summits above 8,000 feet in elevation through 9 a.m. Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service in Honolulu. Forecasters noted the strongest winds should be expected above 12,000 feet in elevation.

Travel to the summit areas should be delayed until winds subside, according to the service. The Mauna Kea access road was closed as of 9:20 a.m. Wednesday.
