Hanohano O Kona lecture coming up

Kona Historical Society is honored to present for its Hanohano O Kona lecture series with presenters William “Yama” Chillingworth and Linda Elliot. Elliot is the founder, president and director of the Hawaii Wildlife Center and will talk about this state- and region-wide wildlife response organization in Kapaau that protects, conserves and aids in the recovery of Hawaii’s native wildlife.

Chillingworth is descended from Native Hawaiian planters and bird catchers and his photography has been exhibited at the Honolulu Academy of Arts. He will present photographs from his new book entitled “Io Lani: The Hawaiian Hawk.”

The talk is from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at West Hawaii Civic Center. The free lecture series spotlights local and state speakers on a wide variety of cultural and historical subjects on the last Wednesday of every month.

Seniors to attend free movie

Kailua-Kona Seniors will attend a free movie day offered by the county at 10 a.m. Wednesday at West Hawaii Civic Center, Building A. The movie “Brooklyn” is about an Irish immigrant who arrives in Brooklyn in the 1950s and she falls into a romance with a local. The event is open to all interested seniors.

Kailua-Kona Seniors will not meet at Hale Halawai this week.

P.E.O. luncheon planned

The local chapter of P.E.O. will hold a no-host luncheon, “Celebrating our Snowbirds,” at 11:30, Saturday at the new Privateer’s Cove Restaurant, 74-5565 Luhia St., Suite B1, in the Kona Old Industrial Area. All visiting P.E.Os are invited.

P.E.O. is an international women’s organization that promotes educational opportunities through loans, grants and scholarships.

Dengue fever prevention meeting planned

Rep. Cindy Evans will host a dengue fever prevention meeting at 6 p.m. Friday at Waikoloa Elementary and Middle School.

Joining Evans is Hawaii County Civil Defense Administrator Darryl Olveira. Attendees may ask questions and share concerns.

Kona Orchid Society meets

The Kona Orchid Society will hold its monthly meeting on Friday at Makua Lani Christian Academy on Kealakaa Street.

Roy Tokunaga of H & R Nurseries in Honolulu will speak on “Flower Boosting Your Orchids.” He has created a new fertilizer and will talk about how to use it. Attendees may order orchids from his nursery in advance on his website that he will deliver at the meeting.

Doors will open at 5:30 p.m and dinner will be served at 6:15. Attendees should bring a pupu to share and a pest-free blooming plant, if they have one, for show and tell. There will also be a drawing for orchids.

Balanay named to college academic team

Kealakehe High School 2014 graduate Sophia Balanay has been named to the 2016 Phi Theta Kappa All-California Community College Academic Team at Cuyamaca College in California.

Balanay, who will be transferring to Cal State San Bernardino in the fall to study psychology, was one of 31 students securing a spot on the team.

She was honored at the annual Phi Theta Kappa awards luncheon Thursday in Sacramento, California on Thursday.

Requirements include a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA, being eligible to graduate with an associate’s degree, participation in honors programs and academically rigorous coursework, awards and recognition for academic achievement, along with leadership and service to the college and community.

“I was really surprised when I found out, kind of shocked, actually,” said Balanay. “It’s a great honor.”
