According to the U.S. Geological Survey Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, the earthquake occurred at 1:27 p.m. about 3.7 miles south-southwest of the volcano’s summit. It had a registered depth of 1.4 miles.
Friday’s earthquake occurred within 24 hours of a magnitude-3.1 earthquake recorded at 2:09 p.m. Thursday in waters off the Big Island. The earthquake was centered about 11.5 miles north-northwest of Loihi Seamount and 13.6 miles south-southeast of Pahala. It had a registered depth of nearly 22 miles.
