A high surf warning is now posted through 6 p.m. Saturday for north-facing shores of Hawaii Island.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu forecast wave heights of 20 to 30 feet for the island’s northern and eastern coasts. The surf is being fueled by a large north swell. .

A new northwest swell will arrive tomorrow and an advisory may then be needed for west-facing shores, according to the service.

Forecasters categorized the surf’s impact as “moderate,” cautioning of strong breaking waves, shore break and currents that can make swimming dangerous.
