Toshio Shirai, 97, Captain Cook died Feb. 24, 2016, at Life Care Center of Kona. Born June 3, 1918, in Kapapala, Ka’u he was a retired commercial fisherman and coffee farmer, member of the Hanei Kumiai, the Hawaii Avocado Association, Hawaii Farm Bureau Federation, Kona Adult Day Center, Kona Historical Society, Kona Hongwanji Buddhist Temple and the Kona Kumamoto Kenjin Kai.
Friends may call at 2 p.m. March 26 at the Kona Hongwanji Buddhist Temple in Kealakekua for a 3 p.m. service. The family requests casual attire.
He is survived by wife, Asayo Shirai of Captain Cook; sons, Ronald Shirai of Captain Cook, Lloyd (Lois) Shirai of Kealakekua; daughters, Lynn Shirai (Brian) Tanimoto, Janis Shirai, all of Hilo; brother, Takashi (Takako) Shirai of Honolulu; sisters, Mildred Arai, Shizue (Edwin) Asato, all of Hilo; four grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Yoshimi Yamamoto
Yoshimi Yamamoto, 93, of Hawi died March 6, 2016, at Kona Community Hospital. Born July 5, 1922, in Kohala, he was a retired owner of Veterans’ Service Station, a U.S. Army World War II veteran and member of the Hawi Jodo Mission.
Friends may call at 1 p.m. March 26 at Hawi Jodo Mission at 55-3364 Akoni Pule Highway in Hawi for a 2:30 p.m. service. The family requests casual attire.
He is survived by daughters, Sharon Yamamoto, Leah Yamamoto, both of Honolulu, Aimee (Glenn) Kasumi of Keopuka; two granddaughters; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
