AdvoCats party Saturday

AdvoCats will have a party at 1 p.m. Saturday at Pavilion No. 1 at Old Kona Airport Park. The event will celebrate the spaying or neutering of more than 18,000 cats since March 17, 1999, and recognize Mayor Billy Kenoi’s proclamation of March as AdvoCats month.

Attendees should bring a pupu to share and meet fellow feeders, trappers, fosters and clinic volunteers. New volunteers are welcome. Water, plates, cups, etc. will be provided.

AdvoCats is a Hawaii County endorsed nonprofit trap-neuter-return organization committed to solving the homeless cat problem in a humane way. Over the last three months, 553 cats have been sterilized thanks to Dr. April Campbell.

A clinic is planned Wednesday in Kona. Those who have cats to be trapped, spayed or neutered and returned should call 327-3724 or email advocatshawaii@aol.com.

Keiki-friendly event to benefit Camp Erin

Hospice of Kona is inviting the public to a kick off of Camp Erin from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in the Hospice of Kona Parking Lot.

This “Keiki Spring Fest” is a benefit for Camp Erin and will include activities, games and food. Pre-sale tickets are 20 percent off at Hospice of Kona, 324-7700 and Memory Lane, 326-9293.

Solar s’more making at the library

Teens are invited to build a solar oven to make a s’more snack to eat at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Kailua-Kona Public Library as part of Teen Tech Week. Participants could win a $20 iTunes gift card. The program is limited to 15 participants.

Also, teens in grades 6-12 should pick up an entry blank in the young adult section of the library to participate in Teen Tech Week.

Tap dancing planned at library

Reni Damron will present a program on tap dance and its music at 3 p.m. Saturday at Kailua-Kona Public Library.

There will be a variety of music used for different style tap dances. The background and origin of the various pieces of music will be discussed and time will be allowed for questions and answers.

Sponsored by Friends of the Libraries, Kona, the program is free.

Buddha Day celebration planned

The fourth annual Buddha Day celebration will be held at 9:30 a.m. Sunday in the Kona Hongwanji Buddhist Temple Social Hall.

Meditation teacher, author, and poet Gavin Harrison will speak on the topic, “Turning Toward Freedom and Love.”

The temple is at 81-6630 Mamalahoa Highway in Kealakekua. Parking is available behind Bank of Hawaii.

Guided meditation classes offered

Gavin Harrison leads a sitting and walking meditation with dialogue and meditation guidance from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday at 73-4548 Mahi St., Kailua-Kona. Experienced and beginning meditators are welcome. Attendees should bring their own meditation cushion. Chairs will be provided. Donations are accepted.
