Hawaii Prep’s offense was due to break out, and the onslaught came at the expense of Kohala.
Ka Makani quadrupled their run total from their first four games Thursday, outslugging the Cowboys 16-9 in a BIIF Division II game in Waimea.
Braden Kojima hit a run-scoring triple and finished with three hits, two for extra bases, and three RBIs for HPA (2-3), Danny Groves was 2 for 4 with an RBI double and Kanai Gaughen had a double, two hits and scored three runs.
Starter Finn Richmond wasn’t as sharp as he was earlier in the season, going just two innings, but Jonah Hurney struck out eight in five innings and got the victory.
Kohala (1-4) finished with more errors (six) than hits (five).
Jayven Amanonce’s two-run double helped Kohala (1-4) take a 5-2 lead, but HPA went ahead for good by scoring five runs in the third.
With one out, Kojima walked, moved to third on Richmond’s double off Amanonce and scored when Gaughen reached on an error. Richmond came home on a balk, and after Blake Winston walked against Steven Medeiros, Tristan Sienkiewicz’s single scored Gaughen to tie the game. Another error allowed scored Winston and Sheldon Aribal’s grounder plated Sienkiewicz.
Gaughen started off a five-run rally in the sixth with a hit, scoring on Groves’ double. Aribal’s walk and Hurney’s single plated two more runs, and after Skylar Roque-Sunahara walked, Kojima brought in the final two runs with a double.
Amanonce was 2 for 5 with two runs scored, and he struck out four in 2 1/3 innings in a no-decision. Medeiros was charged with the loss, yielding five hits and six runs three earned, with three walks and two strikeouts.
Kohala’s Chance Pang walked three times along with a single and scored three runs.
Hurney allowed just two hits, but he walked six and was touched for five runs, only two earned.
